Our Emergency First Aid at Work course in Jersey is a practical, one day qualification for low risk workplaces that want staff who can respond calmly and confidently in an emergency. What you will learn

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Assess an emergency situation and make sure it is safe to approach
  • Carry out a primary survey on a casualty
  • Provide adult CPR and use an automated external defibrillator, AED
  • Place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position
  • Recognise and treat choking
  • Control external bleeding and recognise shock
  • Provide first aid for common minor injuries in the workplace

Emergency First Aid at Work, course content

The exact balance of topics can be adapted to your workplace, however a typical Emergency First Aid at Work course in Jersey includes:

  • Legal duties and workplace responsibilities
  • How first aid fits within health and safety arrangements

  • Scene safety and dynamic risk assessment
  • Primary survey of the casualty

  • Adult CPR, including correct compression depth and rate
  • Use of an AED, automated external defibrillator
  • Recovery position, including adapting for different environments

  • Recognising and responding to choking in adults
  • When and how to use back blows and abdominal thrusts

  • Types of external bleeding
  • Use of dressings and bandages
  • Recognising and managing hypovolaemic shock

  • Cuts, grazes, bruises and small wounds
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Simple soft tissue injuries

Content is aligned with the nationally recognised Emergency First Aid at Work specification, delivered through NUCO Training and regulated by FAA, giving you confidence that the qualification is robust and up to date.

Assessment and Certification

Learners are assessed throughout the day by the instructor through:

  • Observation of practical skills
  • Participation in scenarios and group work
  • Short question and answer sessions

There is no formal written exam in the traditional sense, however learners must demonstrate that they can perform the required practical skills safely and understand when to use them.

On successful completion, each learner receives a FAA Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work, issued through NUCO Training. The qualification is valid for three years. We strongly recommend attending an Annual Refresher for First Aiders to keep skills sharp between full requalification dates.
